Sawfest is the greatest human-powered saw festival on Earth!

Sawfest will run from Friday  27th to Sunday 29th July 2018
in Sheffield, and at Bamford near Sheffield…

Sawfest is  for serious saw-enthusiasts whether pit-saw, cross-cut or small saws e.g. tenon and panel saws.

Sawfest is organised by Gavin Phillips who is Course Curator for Bodgers Ball and started running saw-training events in 2014.


All activities on Saturday & Sunday are included in your standard ticket of £80 .

Hawley Tool Collection

On Sunday, handle & admire the Simon Barley Saw Collection within Keith Hawley Tool Collection and lust over their lovely library.  You can  tour the whole Kelham Island Museum with  Paul Kipling starting at 1230, or join him at 1430 for just the saws.  Whilst Paul’s services are free to you, you must pay the normal museum admission of £6 or £5 concession.

Ian Bullivant

Ian was apprenticed as a saw smith at Spear and Jackson in 1974. He’s hammered saws ever since. He’s a bit deaf.  He’ll show you how to make your saw not only straight but also stiff.

Chris Walker

Chris is a retired saw-factory owner who’ll talk about saw-smithing theory.

Brian Alcock

The grinder Brian Alcock will grind and profile your saw-hammers & demonstrate taper-grinding. He’s the last self-employed grinder in Sheffield.

Slava Rode

Slava from Greyhound Toolworks makes custom saws and delightful  handles. He will be showing how he makes saw handles as well as saw sharpening technique.

Barry Bate

Barry is a retired woodwork teacher and ran the small saw classes at Bodgers Ball 2018.

Barbara Czoch

Barbara is a pit-sawing fiend and may team up with Joe Thompson of Weald and Downland Museum to share trestle and see-sawing with you.


Where else could we hold Sawfest but in Sheffield?

On Friday 27 July there’ll be saw-smithing at Atkinson Walker, grinding hammers and saws with Brian Alcock.

On  Sunday afternoon 29 July you can take a tour of Simon Barley’s saws at Keith Hawley Tool Collection at Kelham Island Museum and look & touch exhibits of saws, saw-tools and catalogs. Or stay at Bamford, sharpen saws, chop down trees, eat your lunch etc
